Todmorden success!

This men’s and women’s doubles triangular team competition was created following the Seaman’s strike in 1966 when only the Todmorden Tennis Club managed to reach the island for a competition. Albany, Castletown and Ramsey provided the visitors with some strong competition and after several more visits to the island the Todmorden club responded by donating a shield for annual competition. Since then it has featured just the island clubs.  Last Sunday the 45th triangular match between the three clubs was finally played (having been postponed from September) and after over 3hrs of stiff competition Albany came out on top wresting the shield from

Castletown who had won it the previous year. Top performers from Albany were Sean Drewry & Jamie Teare who won all their 4 sets. The Castletown sisters, Elena and Hannah Snidal also won all their 4 sets. Otherwise wins/losses were fairly evenly  distributed across the clubs. At the conclusion of play with scores; Albany 86 games, Castletown 66 games and Ramsey 29 games, tournament Referee, Bryan Sharp, presented the shield to Albany captain, Ian Watson. Thanks to the Albany members who provided afternoon tea for the players and it was nice to welcome players from the other clubs.

Mixed Leagues

At last the Summer mixed league matches have been completed and our 3 teams are all champions  Albany C won division 4, the B team won division 2 and the A team won division 1. Well done to the team captains Alison King, Kirsten Hall and Karen Kelly for managing to field teams though it took 26 players to complete the fixtures! There does seem to be a reluctance with so many members to play competitive tennis. I wonder does this happen in other sports? The club’s league players have done us proud and we have 7 trophies to “pick up” at the IOMLTA League presentations/supper which this year is being held at Albany on Saturday 11 November starting at 7.30pm.  Please will as many as possible turn up and support this event. There will be a raffle to raise funds for the Island Games team to compete in Gibraltar in 2019. If you are able to donate a raffle prize please contact Daphne Snidal  (834815/450967) or leave it in the club office and I’ll see that it is given to her.

A Lotte of Talent!

Charlotte Clarke (aged 12) finished off her week in the UK playing an U16 event in Widnes. This was a really tough task but she needs to play at a higher age group to raise her ranking and be accepted in to higher grade events. Whilst she lost in the 1st round of the main draw she finished r/up in the consolation event. No mean result for a 12 year old! She would like to thank Equiom (Isle of Man) Ltd for sponsoring her travel expenses for this trip.

The IOMLTA Presentation Night will be held at Albany this year on Saturday 11 November starting at 7.30pm. I do hope all those who have played in the league matches will attend to collect their medals and trophies. This year it’s a fish or sausage and chips meal (£12) and we need to know your choice of meal before the 9 November. Cheques payable to Albany LTC.

Send details to and leave chqs. in the white box.

An Isle of Man Club Forum will be held at the club on Tuesday 21 November starting at 6pm. Paul Bennett (Head of LTA North Region) will be here to answer any tennis queries members from all the Island’s clubs may have. If you have a matter you wish to raise please let me know and I will pass it on to the IOMLTA Secretary, Jackie Russell. This forum could be of benefit and interest to parents of club juniors also new members.

Latest news on Charlotte Clarke (12) who has been playing in Widnes. So far she has won the 12 and under event. She also played in 14 and under losing her 1st match 7/5 3/6 (9-11). In the 14 and under Consolation, she won 3 matches to win that competition. Then on to Birchwood to play an under 16 event  to give her more competitive experience. She lost her 1st match against the No 2 seed, who has a 5.2 rating whereas Charlotte is 5.8. This loss moved her to the consolation event where she won her 1st match. Playing again Thursday. She was sponsored for this event by Equiom (Isle of Man) Limited.

A reminder that the club would like ALL members to join the British Tennis Membership scheme. It’s free and you will be able to OPT IN to the Wimbledon Ballot for 2018. You can find all the info on the LTA website/British Tennis Membership. British Tennis Awards 2017 – Also those who already have a BTM no are invited to vote, on line for  someone in the club who you think is an unsung worker for the club. Again details are on the LTA website and all members should have received e-mailed info.

Finally – please pray for fine weather on Sunday 29th October. The club is hosting the annual triangular match between Albany, Castletown and Ramsey. Castletown are the current holders and Albany would like some support for their efforts to try and win it back.

The referee, Ian Watson is not sure we can complete the event for Finals on Saturday  due to the bad weather – even with an indoor court he can only schedule one match at a time instead of 3 outdoors plus one indoors. Who’d want to referee a tournament?

Two of our juniors have had further successes in recent UK tournaments.

Charlotte Clarke (12) played in a grade 3 event at the Bolton Tennis Arena and finished runner-up.  She has also played in a grade 4 event in Halifax which was for U16 players and she finished 5th. Last Friday her UK ranking moved up from 62 to 58. Charlotte is very keen to make tennis her career and works really hard training, enjoys her coaching and is always asking seniors to give her a hit. She has just gained sponsorship from Equiom Limited towards the travel costs of her next event – playing U12, U14 and U16 – in Warrington.

Jayden Go is another junior who works hard on his game and is for ever at the club practising or having coaching. He recently play played at Sherborne winning all his matches, then won 2 matches in Wrexham and 2 more matches in Liverpool. The UK competitions are tough and to win matches is quite an achievement. If any other juniors play in UK tournaments please let me have your scores – I can e-mail you the standard form for recording events/results.

The recent Big Stir Coffee Morning held at the club raised  £135 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Thanks to Carisa Skehan, Sharon Lane , Linda Donald and all our members who supported the event. Friday 27th October will be PINK FRIDAY.

Other events:

This year the club will be hosting the IOMLTA Annual Dinner/Prize Presentation on Saturday 11 November. More details later.

Albany/Auxesia Ltd Junior Club Championships update:

The awful weather is making it difficult to complete the matches. However the U8s played a round robin last Saturday with several players competing for the first time. After some close matches the winner was Henry Leigh, r/up Noah Chambers and 3rd Magnus Benson. With all the players showing they are making progress in learning how to play. Some of them are only 5yrs old but we must remember Rafa Nadal started when he was 4yrs so anything is possible! We still have U12 and U18 singles, plus 12s and 18s doubles to complete but we do need good weather. The indoor court isn’t always available as members are booking it.

We now have a definite date – Sunday 29 October starting at 2pm – for playing The Todmorden Shield which is an annual triangular match between Albany, Castletown and Ramsey which we will be hosting. I need some volunteers to help provide the tea. Let me know if you can help and what you could provide. Supporters will also be made very welcome.

Albany/ Chrystals Senior Open – Usual reminder when a tournament is starting – please get your entries in early. Entries close on Tuesday 3 October at 7pm. E-mail or there are plenty of forms in the clubhouse, so just pop it in the post box. This event is OPEN to players from all Manx clubs or even visitors from UK plus we certainly want to see Island Juniors entered. Events are Men’s/Women’s singles and doubles plus mixed doubles. Good cash prizes to be won with the overall winner receiving £60 plus engraved medal. Any queries contact Ian Watson 496293 or me 861497.

The Friday Ladies continue to have a successful, social get togethers each Friday from 10am to 12noon approx.  This has proved to be a blessing for new residents  – maybe moving due to their husband’s employment. If interested contact Jan Gaskill on 862144 for details.

The club’s annual junior championships, sponsored by Auxesia Ltd, got off to a good start on Saturday with fine weather and some of the younger players showing a bit of “know how” with court craft.

Cameron Roome and Henry Davies had a very good match. They are under 10s (green ball players)  but had also entered the U12s. having lost their 1st round matches to stronger players they met in the play back/consolation round. Cameron started well winning the first set 4/1 but Henry fought back to take the second set 4/2.

So the match needed a champion’s tie-break to settle it. Cameron set off at a good pace and lead 8-3, then Henry dragged it back to 9-8 before Cameron won 10-8. They showed they are keen to battle back when losing. With the format both boys have a third match and they will have gained a lot of experience. It’s one thing to have coaching from our experienced club coach, Ian Watson but matches is the way to add to your skills. Well done boys – I enjoyed watching you.

U12 mxd singles

Main draw 1st rnd:

Orry Farnworth bt Cameron Roome 4/0 4/0;

Sarah Long bt Henry Davies 4/0 4/0.

Semi Finals Orry bt Sarah 4/2 4/1.

Consolation Cameron bt Henry 4/1 2/4 (10-8).

U10s – (green ball)

Orry Farnworth won his 5 matches 4/0; Cameron Roome – 4 wins; Lucas Harding – 3 wins; Henry Davies 2 wins; Hadassah Smith 1 win.

r/r mxd singles

Jayden Go bt  Roch Mirski 6/1 3/6 (10-7);

Jack Christian bt Aalish Kelly 6/0 6/0;

Jayden bt Jack 6/1 7/5,

Roch bt Aalish 6/1 6/0.

Red ball and Orange ball will be played on Finals Day, this Saturday – all players will be advised of their match times.  Presentation will be at approx.  We usually provide tea for our competitors so if any parent can volunteer to make a few sandwiches or bring some cake please let me know.

Our Friday Morning Ladies group are as usual supporting a charity, which is something they do throughout the year. This Friday will be the “The Big Stir” Coffee Morning to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. It will be held during the usual playing time 10am to 12noon. Please go along and support this worthwhile charity, take a friend or bake a cake. Lets see if we can raise more than in previous years.  Anymore info – contact Linda or Sharon.  Ladies should have received details of this year’s Christmas Lunch. If you want to be part of the celebrations contact Val Worth  or Gill Smith and choose your menu.

The work party planned for last Sunday had to be postponed due to the awful weather.  So we are looking for helpers/workers this Saturday and also Sunday from 11am. This is to carry out court cleaning which cannot be done professionally. You can get a bit wet so you will need wellies and old clothes!!

Please let Bryan know if you intend coming – contact 861497 or e-mail .

Entries for the club’s junior championships, sponsored by Auxesia Ltd ( are slowly coming in but it would help the organisers if this process could be a lot quicker. Entries close on Tuesday 12 September at 7pm.  You can put your form in the club’s white post box on the wall inside the clubhouse or e-mail .

Have any of our members any spare knitting wool they no longer need? If so I would appreciate it as I continue to knit sweaters, scarves, hats and mitts for one of the charities the club supports – Friends of Chernobyl’s Children.

I mainly use DK wool and knit items for the younger siblings of those that visit the club each summer, i.e. baby to 7years. If you have any to donate it can be left in the kitchen. There will be more updates on various events to be held at the club during the next few weeks i.e. – The Todmorden Shield doubles competition between Albany, Castletown and Ramsey, the Albany/Chrystals Senior Open, the club’s senior closed championships, junior and mini tennis coaching.  Watch this space and also look at the club’s informative website.

Albany News 24th August 2017

by Pat Sharp

Our hardworking Club Captain, Jackie Russell has reported on our successes in the winter, men’s and women’s leagues this year. Considering so many members are too busy or not keen to play league tennis, the Team Captains have done a great job fielding teams and winning four of the eight leagues Albany played in. These were;

December to April –Winter Mixed Leagues – we entered one team and we won Division1.  Well done to the squad  Sarah, Laura, Charlotte, Kirsten, Alison, Andy, Jim, David, Garreth, Pawel, Stuart and non-playing Captain – Jackie!

In April to August – Summer Doubles Leagues (we entered 4 Men’s teams and 2 Women’s teams).  Our successes were: Men’s Division 1 – Albany A won – the squad was Ian (Captain), Jamie, Jim, Sean and Adam. Women’s Division 1 – Albany A won – squad was: Jane (Captain), Alison, Charlotte, Katsuyo, Kath, Trish, Kirsten, Sarah, Laura and Katie. We also won Women’s Division 2 – the players were: Jackie (Captain), Kirsten, Charlotte, Trish, Katsuyo, Kath, Jane, Lisa and Clare.

The teams used several juniors in all our teams and our youngest player, 12yr old Charlotte Clarke played the most matches – eight! Now we are playing in the Mixed Doubles leagues so here’s hoping for more success.

Apologies to ALL our senior and junior members for asking Jan to send out an incorrect entry form for the Albany/Auxesia Senior Closed Championships. No excuses – I made a mistake and I’m sorry. Anyway the correct form has now been sent out and forms are also available at the club. With a fair number of our members playing league tennis is it too much to hope that most of them will enter the Club Championships – if only in the doubles?

Events are Men’s & Women’s Singles and Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles. There is no entry fee! The event is sponsored by Auxesia Ltd. Auxesia’s website   Auxesia’s Facebook Page

Finally the total raised in donations at our recent celebration lunch has finally reached £750, which we think is fantastic and will be of great use to the three chosen charities.
