The club’s annual junior championships, sponsored by Auxesia Ltd, got off to a good start on Saturday with fine weather and some of the younger players showing a bit of “know how” with court craft.

Cameron Roome and Henry Davies had a very good match. They are under 10s (green ball players)  but had also entered the U12s. having lost their 1st round matches to stronger players they met in the play back/consolation round. Cameron started well winning the first set 4/1 but Henry fought back to take the second set 4/2.

So the match needed a champion’s tie-break to settle it. Cameron set off at a good pace and lead 8-3, then Henry dragged it back to 9-8 before Cameron won 10-8. They showed they are keen to battle back when losing. With the format both boys have a third match and they will have gained a lot of experience. It’s one thing to have coaching from our experienced club coach, Ian Watson but matches is the way to add to your skills. Well done boys – I enjoyed watching you.

The work party planned for last Sunday had to be postponed due to the awful weather.  So we are looking for helpers/workers this Saturday and also Sunday from 11am. This is to carry out court cleaning which cannot be done professionally. You can get a bit wet so you will need wellies and old clothes!!

Please let Bryan know if you intend coming – contact 861497 or e-mail albanytennispr@manx.net .

Entries for the club’s junior championships, sponsored by Auxesia Ltd (www.auxesia.im) are slowly coming in but it would help the organisers if this process could be a lot quicker. Entries close on Tuesday 12 September at 7pm.  You can put your form in the club’s white post box on the wall inside the clubhouse or e-mail ianwatsonpts@manx.net .

Have any of our members any spare knitting wool they no longer need? If so I would appreciate it as I continue to knit sweaters, scarves, hats and mitts for one of the charities the club supports – Friends of Chernobyl’s Children.

I mainly use DK wool and knit items for the younger siblings of those that visit the club each summer, i.e. baby to 7years. If you have any to donate it can be left in the kitchen. There will be more updates on various events to be held at the club during the next few weeks i.e. – The Todmorden Shield doubles competition between Albany, Castletown and Ramsey, the Albany/Chrystals Senior Open, the club’s senior closed championships, junior and mini tennis coaching.  Watch this space and also look at the club’s informative website.

Our hardworking Club Captain, Jackie Russell has reported on our successes in the winter, men’s and women’s leagues this year. Considering so many members are too busy or not keen to play league tennis, the Team Captains have done a great job fielding teams and winning four of the eight leagues Albany played in. These were;

December to April –Winter Mixed Leagues – we entered one team and we won Division1.  Well done to the squad  Sarah, Laura, Charlotte, Kirsten, Alison, Andy, Jim, David, Garreth, Pawel, Stuart and non-playing Captain – Jackie!

In April to August – Summer Doubles Leagues (we entered 4 Men’s teams and 2 Women’s teams).  Our successes were: Men’s Division 1 – Albany A won – the squad was Ian (Captain), Jamie, Jim, Sean and Adam. Women’s Division 1 – Albany A won – squad was: Jane (Captain), Alison, Charlotte, Katsuyo, Kath, Trish, Kirsten, Sarah, Laura and Katie. We also won Women’s Division 2 – the players were: Jackie (Captain), Kirsten, Charlotte, Trish, Katsuyo, Kath, Jane, Lisa and Clare.

The teams used several juniors in all our teams and our youngest player, 12yr old Charlotte Clarke played the most matches – eight! Now we are playing in the Mixed Doubles leagues so here’s hoping for more success.

Apologies to ALL our senior and junior members for asking Jan to send out an incorrect entry form for the Albany/Auxesia Senior Closed Championships. No excuses – I made a mistake and I’m sorry. Anyway the correct form has now been sent out and forms are also available at the club. With a fair number of our members playing league tennis is it too much to hope that most of them will enter the Club Championships – if only in the doubles?

Events are Men’s & Women’s Singles and Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles. There is no entry fee! The event is sponsored by Auxesia Ltd. Auxesia’s website   Auxesia’s Facebook Page

Finally the total raised in donations at our recent celebration lunch has finally reached £750, which we think is fantastic and will be of great use to the three chosen charities.

The lounge looks really good now, decorated and with new carpet and is now ready for hire.  It has room for 54 people, with use of a fully fitted kitchen and the rates are very reasonable and tennis parties for children are available. Full details from Kirsten Hall on social@albanyltc.co.uk

OPEN DAY AT ALBANY

The club held a successful Open day as part of the LTA initiative “Great British Tennis Weekend” last Saturday with non-members being made welcome. Both adults and children were given coaching and the opportunity to play. The midday Red ball coaching session had 30 children on the four mini tennis courts indoors. Club Coach, Ian Watson was assisted by several members, including three juniors Jay Skelcher-Maxwell, A J Go and Jayden Go and the whole event was put together by Social Secretary, Kirsten Hall, Chairman Stuart Colligon, Welfare Officer Clare Skelcher, helped by Rob Orr. All attendees were given a membership information pack and they will be able to attend three times as a guest before joining. They were also advised on other club activities including club social play sessions and the children’s Summer Camps which start next week. The organisers had been very busy with a BBQ, tennis ball colouring competition etc. Thanks to everyone who helped and took part. I hope everyone enjoyed it.

The fine weather is persuading more members to leave the TV and go to club nights.

Tuesday was a good turn out with 19 players using all four courts.

The other club sessions are proving popular – Wednesdays 10 – 12.30, Friday Ladies 10am – 12noon and Sundays 10.30am – 12 noon.

Finally we have our new carpet in the lounge and on the stairs. My word what a difference and with the decorating done by a member, Nerijus Gricevicius, the club lounge is looking good. It is available for hire by members/non members for children’s parties with tennis, adult family events or organisations’ functions, business meetings, lectures etc. Contact our social Secretary, Kirsten Hall, e-mail social@albanyltc.co.uk.

Don’t forget the children’s Summer Camps start next week so contact ianwatsonpts@manx.net if you wish to book a place.

Well, didn’t our tennis players do well in Gotland?!

The Albany players involved gaining medals were : Women’s team event Gold – Laura Feely, Katie Harris, Elena Snidal plus Karen Faragher(Douglas). In individual events it was Mixed Doubles Bronze  for Sean Drewry partnered by K Faragher; Women’s Singles silver medal Laura Feely, Women’s Doubles Gold for Laura Feely and K Faragher. Congratulations to all tennis medallists.

The Albany/Equiom Junior Open starts this  Saturday (8th) The schedule of matches will be -emailed to all competitors. Once again entries were slow coming in and I gather it was the same for the IOMLTA Veteran Closed Championships – we really must persuade competitors to enter early  as there is a lot for the referee to do after entries close. Remember we are all volunteers and many officials have full time jobs so running tournaments is done in their spare time. With that thought may I remind all Albany juniors that the IOMLTA Junior Closed Championships will be held at Douglas LTC, Kensington Road from 22 July to 30 July and entries close at 5pm on Thursday 20 July. Entry forms are in our clubhouse and should  be e-mailed to iomtennis@manx.net. There are Boys and Girls events for U8, U9, U10, U12 U14, U16, U18 singles plus doubles.  Further information from Referee, Paul Jarvis by e-mail as above or mob 494045.. So please represent your club and enter early.

Will all Albany juniors and Mini Tennis members please join the British Tennis Membership scheme. It is free, there are benefits and you should have a membership number and LTA rating.

Also on Saturday 22 July there will be an Open Day at Albany with fun social tennis for anyone interested in having a game. We can provide racquets and tennis balls if you are thinking of starting to play or returning to the game.  There will be a BBQ. Further details fom Social Secretary, Kirsten Hall on social@albanyltc.co.uk.
