“A Night at the Races ” held in the club lounge last Friday was another successful fund raiser producing at least £1,000 after expenses which will be used to repay our outstanding loans on the new courts.  The committee wish to thank all the companies  and individuals who sponsored the nine races and as well as the many members and friends who sponsored owners, trainers & jockeys. This is always a fun event so ably run by John Morrison of Morrison Photos Thanks also to those who helped on the night with the suppers (Port Jack Chippy), the raffle and generally clearing up afterwards. This is the last planned fund raiser for this year but the committee would like to hear from any members who might have suggestions for social, fund raising or competition events for next year. Maybe our juniors would like to organise an event – with the help of parents. Years ago we did sponsored walks, 24hr tennis, serving speed competitions, ladies football, cheese and wine parties etc. perhaps we can look back at our history and try some again. Also if club members have a company or work for a company that would like to display a banner in the indoor court please let me know. That’s enough of money matters.

Mini and junior members – coaching will take a break during the Christmas/New Year period. The last session will be Friday 16 December. Coaching will recommence when schools re-open in January (dates to be advised later). There will, however, be the annual Christmas Junior/mini team competition and quiz.  This will be on Monday 19 December from 10am – 12noon, lunch break and then 1pm – 3pm. Entry fee for the day is £5 and players to take a packed lunch. You will be able to sign up for this on the board in the clubroom. This event is organised by club coach, Ian Watson and the emphasis is on fun.

Don’t forget the Teddy Bears raffle for Mini members only – tickets (10p each) are in the club room and also there are a lot of packets of handmade Christmas gift labels for sale.

Don’t forget that the club facilities will be available to members throughout the Christmas/New Year period. A good way to run off the festive food!

On Tuesday the AGM was a smooth affair with members seemingly happy with how the committee run the club. The Chairman gave a report on the year’s activities and particularly thanked those involved with the 50th Year Celebration Dinner and the visit of Mrs Cathie Sabin, President of the LTA. Club coach, Ian Watson and his team were thanked for the coaching and competition programme. The financial scene, presented by Treasurer, David Bufton, was satisfactory and it was recommended that there be no increase in membership fees or cost of hiring the indoor court. The Committee, President and Vice-Presidents were re-elected en-bloc.

Special notice for Mini members – Membership Secretary, Jan Gaskill, has organised a Christmas Raffle for three lovely teddy bears. Tickets at 10p each will be on sale on Saturday during your coaching programme.

The club’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 22 November in the club lounge starting at 6.30pm. Our Chairman, Stuart Colligon says he would like to see a lot of members attending and giving their opinions on the past year’s activities and development plus ideas for the coming season.

The Friday Ladies group will be having their Christmas Lunch at The Empress Hotel on Friday 9 December. The meal is three course. Cost is £21 including a tip. Friday Ladies members pay £17.  Contact Val Partington 844173/467438 or e-mail OR Catherine Brinkler 853570 or Please let them know by 21 November.  I can recommend this club event -it’s good value and entertaining. The Friday Ladies Morning group has been active for many, many years and is still very popular. New members, especially new residents say it’s a great way to get in to island life as well as exercise. The group holds various charity fund raising events during the year and everyone has the chance to help organise these. They meet every Friday from 10am to 12 noon and if anyone wants information they can contact Jan Gaskill 862144/439613 or e-mail You can attend three times as a guest  before needing to join. I can assure you there will be a warm welcome. Play is always on as they have use of the indoor court if the weather isn’t good.

The Auxesia Junior Open tournament has had a slow start  so I’ll do all the results next week.

Autumn leaves – please help keep the courts as clear as possible. Last Saturday young Lucy Clarke (9) was helping club President, Bryan Sharp with sweeping and then wheeled four barrow loads to be disposed of. Any juniors are welcome to join in!

Club Coach, Ian Watson, had the pleasure of presenting IOMLTA  trophies to two of our juniors. The trophies were awarded at the recent IOMLTA dinner but unfortunately Sean Drewry (Island Junior Player of 2016) and Roch Mirski (IOMLTA Most Improved Junior of 2016) were not at the dinner. However, arrangements were made to present them on Monday and Ian, who coaches both boys, was happy to do this on behalf of the IOMLTA.  Click Here for Photo

Sean and Roch are just two of our juniors who work hard to improve their tennis and play in tournaments in the UK as often as finances allow. If any company would like to offer them some travel or kit sponsorship, I’m sure it would be welcomed. Contact Ian 496293 e-mail or me 861497,

Plans for our annual Night at the Races on Friday 25 November starting at 7pm is progressing well. If members wish to help on the night, find Race sponsors, fill a Race sheet or help with the raffle and suppers please contact Jan Gaskill, Kirsten Hall (for tickets) or me.

The winter mixed leagues are now underway and Albany A made a good start with a 5-1 win, at home, over Castletown A . Unfortunately for the visitors they were a player short but it’s still a tough fixture.

At the moment the autumn leaves are falling thick and fast, so will members who go to the club for a game sweep some of them to the corners of the courts. It is a safety issue and we must all do our bit – we can’t afford a groundsman!

Last Sunday was President’s Day and we held the annual senior/junior American tournament for the Sharp Trophy. Two groups of six pairs played a round robin of tie-breaks with each young player having a senior partner with Roch Mirski, the island’s most improved player for 2016, playing as a “senior” with the youngest player 7yr old Henry Leigh. There was a good mix of ages and fun was had by all with Club Chairman Stuart Colligon partnered by Sam Skelcher-Maxwell (12) the eventual winners.  Click on the Gallery page for photos.

All matches were tie-breaks except for s/finals and final which were Champions tie-breaks The prizes were presented by Club President, Bryan Sharp.

Group A – winner Nerijus Gricivicius/Ailish Kelly, 2nd Jan Gaskill/Orry Farnworth, 3rd Roch Mirski/Henry Leigh,  4th Nick Kelly, Ben Bosworth, 5th  Garreth Roome/Hadassah Smith, 6th Barbara Foley/Nathaniel Denton.

Group B – winner Robbie Orr/Cameron Roome (9yrs) 2nd Ziggy Mirski/Charlotte Clarke, 3rd Stuart Colligon/Sam Skelcher Maxwell, 4th Jackie Russell, Greg Kelly, 5th Andrew  Farnworth/Robert Russell, 6th Bryan Sharp /Ale Ramirez (10yrs).

All players progressed to a knock-out stage. Results:

1st round Bryan/Ale bt Garreth/Hadassah 7/5, Andrew/Robert bt Barbara /Nathaniel 7/3;

2nd round Nick/Ben bt Bryan/Ale 7/5, Andrew/Robert bt Jackie/Greg 7/6;

qtr/finals – Nick/Ben bt  Nerijus/Ailish7/5, Ziggy/Charlotte bt Roch/Henry 7/2, Stuart/Sam bt Jan/Orry 7/3, Robbie/Cameron bt Andrew/Robert 7/6;

s/finals Ziggy/Charlotte bt Nick/Ben 10/3, Stuart/Sam bt Robbie/Cameron 10/8.

Final Stuart/Sam bt Ziggy/Charlotte 10/2.

This was a yellow ball event on full size court and the juniors played very well and were complimented by their senior partners.

We have had quite a few new members recently – probably the indoor court during the winter is an attraction. Can I recommend that you all take out the LTA’s British Tennis Membership? It’s free and gives many benefits including entering the Wimbledon ballot, obtaining tickets for other events e.g. Davis Cup. Just log on to and follow the links.  There are instructions and link on the home page of Albany’s website too.

Will all juniors please hand in or post their entries for the next tournament – Albany Auxesia Junior OPEN asap. Ian will be back on Sunday but I want to have as many entries as possible in before the closing date 6pm Tuesday 8th November. I have to order the trophies at least 10 days before the finals on Saturday 19 November. This event is open to juniors from other clubs and it would benefit Island junior tennis if some “new faces” played. It can get boring playing the same players and I speak from experience. When I was playing we always new that the likes of Muriel Cain, Wendy McDowell, Mary Rigby, Janet Southam would be waiting for us if we managed to reach a semi-final. It was the same for the men : Ron Ronan, David Kennaugh, Dave Wilkinson, Nigel Walton, Colin Brown etc. So let’s make it more interesting for our current juniors please.

A Night at the Races – Friday 25 November from 7pm. Tickets are now available from Kirsten Hall – email: or mob. 391961. £10 for fish & chip/£8 sausage & chip suppers inc. tea/coffee or soft drink.

Finally – parents of mini tennis players who attend coaching on Saturdays are welcome to have a game on the outdoor courts  whilst the children are having their lesson indoors.

President’s Day  Senior/Junior tournament this Sunday starting at 2pm. We still need 3 more juniors to play with the seniors. I realise it’s half-term and quite a few members are away but orange ball/ green ball players or under 12s are needed. It is a yellow ball event on the full court but played at a gentle pace!!
