Road to Wimbledon – only the 2nd year that the Island has had players reach the main draw event. Both Jayden Go and Sarah Long gave it their “best shot” but we do have to realise that all other counties are bigger than the Isle of Man and probably have 50 to 100 players under 14yrs, whereas we have at the most 10 who compete. Jayden lost his qtr. final match to the runner-up (Cameron Owen) and in the doubles partnered by Noah Humphreys (Derbyshire) lost the qtr.final doubles in a very tight match, 4/5 (7) 5/4(3) 10-8. So close to reaching the s/final. Meanwhile Sarah Long had some tough matches as reported last week. However, Sarah partnered by Isabelle Knott (Somerset) won their 1st round match in the girls doubles 6/1 3/6 (10-7) before losing their next match 4/0/40 to Romily Murray (Cum)/Rosie Woodward (N Scotland). Years ago we used to have the Midland Bank Junior Open – held at Onchan Park – which attracted squads and individuals from the UK. One year a teenage Nick Brown won the boys singles. He later went on to play Davis Cup for GB. An event like that would help our juniors immensely. Well done Jayden and Sarah!
